The Holiest month of the Year. Kartik is the eighth and holiest of all lunar months, as per the Hindu calendar. The Purnima Tithi or the Full Moon Day in the Hindu month of Kartik is referred to as Kartik Purnima.
Indian mythology states that the celebrations of Kartik Purnima begin on the day of Prabodhini Ekadashi. Also known as Tripuri Purnima or Tripurari Purnima, on this day, many devotees take a dip in the holy waters of rivers such as the Ganga, the Yamuna, the Godavari, the Narmada, etc.
The devotees believe that taking a holy dip in the Ganga River can wash away one’s sin and bring prosperity to one’s life. Many people worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi and prepare scrumptious prasad.
As per the Hindu Mythology, many believe that on this day, Lord Shiva killed a trio of Asura brothers, Tripurasura, by taking the avatar of Tripurari. The Gods were elated by the end of Tripurasura and hence they celebrated it like Diwali.
